As a child, I always looked forward to summer and Holy Week because my brothers and I, along with my manang Boots, had all the time to play outside.
We looked forward to the processions, too – not to reflect, as we were children, but because we saw it as part of the festivities. Walking behind the carriage that transported the image of Mama Mary was both a treat and a part of tradition.
Many Holy Weeks later, I found myself walking behind the carriage of Mama Mary once again and this time with one of my cousins.
It was raining. I personally do not mind the rain but the man behind me thought I needed an umbrella. I didn’t want to make a fuss so I just adjusted my stride.
That Holy Week was different because so many photos were taken and while I was not in the spotlight, I was very near to it. I am now used to it but this morning, while reflecting on my life, my spirituality, and my experiences, I was reminded of this quote by Abraham Lincoln:
“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”
Today, I ask and pray to God that we all remain as good people no matter our circumstances.
